raised for special olympics maryland. for a polar bg fit bear. tim tuten is live at sandy point state park for the polar bear plunge. because of the impending snow in the forecast all school closings and delays are running along the bottom of our screen and the list is growing. right now we go to john collins for a look at conditions at sandy point. how is it going? >> the snow is not here yet but the cold air is in the water and in the air. here is a map. we prepared a lot of information. the numbers in white is the water temperatures which are mid 30's at thomas point light house. mouth of the sever river. and temperature there. in the blue box on the left side is the beach air conditions. and the air is conditioned. 22 degrees is the air temperature. south wind not quite 10 miles an hour so that gives us a wind chill of 13. then you put the people in that cold water and they get out of the water and all of that stuff evaporates on their skin. and that is cold, that is really cold. tim tuten is all bundled up and he will tell us what is going on at sandy point. >> everything is ha

the first responders who did what they could at sandy hook elementary. i was called to respond to the bombing of the federal building in oklahoma city. i spent one month investigating that senseless attack that culminated in the death of 160 americans and 19 children under the age of six. i was never the same. it is likely that the victims and survivors from newton will never be the same. do not forget the first responders. they need your help. today, we have a choice. we can maintain the status quo by putting our faith in gunfighters, the good guy we hope will prevail over the bad guy with a gunman, or we remove the obstacles that challenge our crime fighters from preventing them from ever getting a gun in the first place. people who sell guns and encourage you to place your faith in the gunfighters. this is not surprising. the fact that you can work as a fire arm without pausing a criminal background check is a flaw so large that it makes many gun laws meaningless and it distorts the fundamental effect the best of atf and every police department in the nation. as a crime figh

this discussion, i'll just tell you one very personal anecdote. three days before the sandy hook shooting, i was in denver, colorado, on personal business. and i was driving through the denver suburbs, and i passed into aurora rah, colorado, and saw the sign and thought to myself -- as journalists often do -- oh, my god, this just disappeared from our landscape. it happened not that long ago in which a young man, now appears to be utterly deranged, b went into a movie theater and began shooting down people with an assault weapon. and it went away. the not part of the presidential debate, it was not part of the fabric of our lives, it was not part of the daily journalistic diet. so on that wednesday night i e-mailed the producer of the "meet the press" show that was coming up on that sunday in which they would be talking about big ideas that america needs to be thinking about. and i said you should put shooting at the top of the list. we have been through aurora, the sikh temple, the oregon shopping mall, think about this, this is before we got to sandy hook. in newtown. we'd had a time of ab

this other story, there's been a lot of discussion about guns in schools, and guns in general after the sandy hook sad situation in december in connecticut. and now there's a kindergarten girl who apparently owns one of these little devices, you look at the screen at hello kitty bubble gun. apparently, she was talking about this toy at school. it's my understanding she actually didn't even have the toy with her at the mt. carmel area school in pennsylvania. as a result of just talking about shooting bubbles at one another, apparently she received a ten-day suspension. it was reduced to two days, but that's kind of unclear now whether or not she should even have faced any kind of suspensi suspension. >> steve: well, this is kind of crazy the two five-year-old girls were waiting at the bus, hey, i'm going to shoot you with my hello kitty bubble machine and somebody overheard it and next thing you know, just because people are, you know, freaked out about guns since sandy hook, the school got involved. and she was suspended for ten days, and then reduced it to two. but she was also given, becaus

storm sandy. >>> the bitter cold is moving over the southeast and mid-atlantic areas. the storm is expected to spread freezing rain and ice over much of the southeast as well. let's turn to cnn. >> looks like the event is taking place in washington, d.c. and will be fast moving. the temperature at 23 degrees and the temperatures hover around the upper teens to low 20s for the overnight hours. this will move through fairly quickly. you have low visibility and you can see one or two inches. we move towards the southeast. this is interesting and the coldest temperatures are across the tri-state area in tennessee. upstate sections of georgia. as a result, quite a bit of icing across the region. numerous reports of car accidents in charlotte, north carolina. the ice is moving towards the east and there is a blaze of ice on the roadways. interstates kiting across charlotte and to knoxville. oak ridge and tricities area making for extremely dangerous road conditions. here's what i was talking about with the system. breezy between 15 and 25 miles per hour. >> when can we expect the brea
